Hi, I'm Katie! Welcome to yellow cucina!

I'm a twenty-something newlywed living in Vancouver, BC. I love to create and prepare delicious meals and treats for my husband, friends and family. Yellow cucina is a place for recipes, photos, successes and blunders from my kitchen and the kitchens that inspire me, as well as the people and things that make my life bright and sweet.

some tidbits...

I love singing. baking & cooking. coffee. running. riding my bike. wearing huge sunglasses. exploring Vancouver. trader joes. yoga. road trips. farmers markets. game nights with friends. traveling. eating while traveling. exploring the outdoors. making food from scratch that really doesn't need to be just for the heck of it.

I love to eat pastries with far too much butter for my own good. fresh berries. dark, dark chocolate. drippy tacos. chewy cookies. crispy potatoes. cheeeeeeese. anything that reminds me of italy. whole grain goodness. homemade ravioli. chocolate. cheese. chocolate.

I love to drink coffee in just about any form, and lately usually from a french press. lavender earl grey tea. red wine. a good dark beer. a smoothie now and then. not nearly enough water (I know... bad Katie).

I love to make soup. pasta. cookies. risotto. stews. pie. curries. pizza. anything with lemon, fresh herbs, or cheese that gets slightly crispy on top. sometimes I go for health, sometimes for decadence, always for taste. We live on a slim budget so I also get to be creative in buying and preparing food that will fill our tummies and not empty our bank account. I try to buy as much organic, local, and fair trade products as I can, but frequently we are limited by our resources.

I'm allergic to whey, rye, cranberry and a few other things. I know what you're thinking: "No Whey!!" (hehe). Whey is a strange allergy which allows me to eat things with butter, yogurt and some cheeses, but not with milk or cream. I typically substitute soy milk in recipes that call for milk. Usually, it works. You probably won't see any recipes with the word cream in them on this site, and I will always give the dairy-free options for each recipe. Sometimes I use vegan recipes, and I'll let you know when that's what's happening!

My kitchen is full of color AND for the first time, SPACE. It's the largest room in our apartment by far and as such, has become the hub of activity. We don't have a dishwasher, so I find myself spending far more time than I'd like to washing the results of my labor. Luckily, I have a sweet husband who is willing to do some scrubbing in return for the yummy things I like to make for us.

I run about three times per week, because let's be honest: life without butter (and cheese, and wine, and ice cream made from coconut milk) is no life at all. But everything's a trade off, right? I have also been working toward losing some weight over the past year and I have been slowly, but consistently, successful. When I reach my goal weight, which I hope to soon, expect a fiesta in my little corner of the blogosphere!

I grew up in Portland, Oregon (where the dream of the 90's is SO alive) and lived for six years in Seattle before forsaking all that is American to move to the Great White North. But, let me tell you a secret. Other than the price of cheese, it's really not that different from the US.

If you have a question, suggestion, request, well then holler at me or leave comments! Lots of comments. Nice ones.

my large, lovely, yellow kitchen
